Lakshmi Sahgal was born October 24, 1914 in
Madras, Madras Presidency, British India, an
activist in the Indian independence movement, a former officer in the
Indian army and
minister of women affairs in the
Azad Hind Government. She later became involved in
politics in independent India, serving as an
MP in the House of Lords, and later running for
president as a leftist candidate.
Lakshmi has decided to study medicine because she wanted to be of service to the poor, especially poor women. As a result, she received an MBBS degree from Madras Medical College in 1938.A year later she received her diploma in gynecology and obstetrics.
Lakshmi wasted no time to participate in the new regiment, called the Rani of Jhansi Regiment. Lakshmi was active both militarily and on the medical front. She played a heroic role not only in fighting.Later, she was minister responsible for women's organization in Arzi Hukumate Azad Hind, led by Subhash Chandra Bose.
